Biometrics

1. What are Biometrics?

Technologies that use unique physical or behavioral characteristics to verify the identity of an individual.

2. How does finger scan identification work?

Using a scanner, the software scans swirls and arcs of the finger to create a grid of intersecting points. These points are then stored as a series of coordinating numbers only. When the finger is scanned again, the number series will repeat and match itself to the stored original.

3. Isn’t this “fingerprinting”?

No. A complete fingerprint is not necessary for thorough identity verification, and no fingerprint images are ever recorded. Turnstile sensors match the grid points that were taken in your original scan and transfer them to the number series the system assigned to you. As this information is stored as a number only, a fingerprint image cannot be recreated and privacy is maintained.

4. Can my information be taken or copied from this system?

No. Because of the way the template of unique points is recreated, it is impossible to duplicate fingerprints and the data is not usable for any other purposes or by any outside agencies.

5. How are biometrics used at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Biometrics are gathered on a guest’s first visit when using Multi-Day, Annual Pass or Season Pass tickets. On subsequent visits these biometrics are referenced to ensure that it is the same guest using the ticket.
